Chapter Eleven
SCOTTY CURSED beneath his breath. âKlingons, sir?â he asked. âRight here, on the ship?â
It was difficult to believe. Nonetheless, Kirkâs intercom voice cut through the throbbing sounds of the engineering room, confirming what he had said a moment earlier.
âRight here on the ship, Mr. Scottâas many as sixteen of them, some armed with phaser pistols. And thatâs not all,â the captain elaborated. âThese Klingons have been enhanced somehow. Theyâre stronger and faster than the kind weâre used to.â
Scotty glanced at the half dozen engineers sitting at control consoles or working up on the catwalk. They looked worried about the news. To be honest, the chief engineer reflected, he was a bit worried himself.
Kirk went on. âItâs possible that theyâll try to find [138] the engine room and take the place over, then use it as a bargaining chip. Certainly, that would be one of the options Iâd consider if I needed a way off the ship.â
âAye, sir,â Scotty agreed. âWhat is it yeâd like us tâ do?â
âThereâs a security team on its way,â said the captain. âIn the meantime, keep these Klingons away from the engines. Itâll be a lot easier to deal with them if theyâre not holding a gun to our heads.â The engineer nodded. âI understand, sir. Anâ ye need nae worryâweâll take care oâ the place until help comes.â
âThanks, Scotty. Kirk out.â The Scotsman looked around at his staff. Naturally, they were all Academy trained, all capable of handling themselves in an adversarial situation. But they werenât armed.
And if the captainâs report was accurate, the Klingons were. If that wasnât cause for concern, Scotty didnât know what was.
